SGA Brief
Issue date: 2/12/10 Section: News
President Ben Able called the twenty-fifth meeting of the 39th Council of the Student Government Association (SGA) to order at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, in the Thomas Room of the University Center.
After the invocation led by treasurer Addison Howard (religious council representative Scott Parnell being absent), senior class representative Alastair Hay took roll: secretary Juliana Battenfield, senior Andrew McCarthy and junior DJ Harris were absent.
Connie Carson, the Vice President for Student Services, appeared before Council and said that the Board of Trustees is meeting this coming week, and that SGA's alcohol resolution will be presented to the Student Life Committee of the Board. Carson said that the resolution itself is not that complex, but that the overarching issues that it raises may cause much deliberation for the Board.
During Officer Reports, Able said that he is looking forward to appearing before the Student Life Committee of the Board of Trustees, and said that he would be talking to them about how the alcohol policy, if instituted, would change all aspects of Furman.
Vice President Patrick Wallace next said that the SGA shuttle will be getting a new Global Positioning System. Treasurer Addison Howard said that around 23 percent of the annual budget has been spent by student groups this far, and that there remains about $5,500 available for new money requests.
In Old Business, Council unanimously approved the "Fashionable Cause" constitution. "Fashionable Cause" is oriented around doing a yearly fashion show in the spring that would work with local boutiques and would send all its proceeds to charity. The "Indie Rock Appreciation Club" (IRAC) constitution was also unanimously approved, after first striking from the constitution a minimum GPA requirement for members of 2.0. The group would revolve around music and would work to co-sponsor musical events on campus.
In Open Forum, Vice President Patrick Wallace said that the clocks in Furman Hall should be fixed by mid-spring.
Council adjourned at 6:22 p.m.
